The Potential Uses of Chelation Therapy

An experienced physician, Vinson DiSanto, DO, offers patients a range of complementary and holistic therapies. Dr. Vinson DiSanto has received certification for Advanced Proficiency in Chelation Therapy.

Chelation therapy involves the injection of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) into the bloodstream. The substance attaches itself to heavy metals and minerals–such as lead, coppery, mercury, and iron–that are present in the blood stream. Then, both the metals and the EDTA are eliminated through the kidneys. The treatment is especially effective for individuals with lead poisoning.

Beyond lead poisoning, chelation therapy may also treat atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease because EDTA binds with calcium deposits present in the plaque that builds up in the arteries and restricts blood flow. Health professionals also believe that EDTA can have the same effects as antioxidants by removing metals that combine with LDL cholesterol.

After chelation therapy, people often report improvements in pain associated with chronic inflammatory disease, including scleroderma, lupus, and arthritis. This improvement may stem from the antioxidant quality of EDTA, which would protect against inflammation.
